North Cobb Rotary: Community Service with a Purpose

Croy Engineering Team at the Skip Spann Connector.

Nancy Prochaska’s journey with Rotary began in an unexpected way - long before she was even eligible to join. In 1972, as a young exchange student in Denmark, she was hosted by a Rotarian family, an experience that left an indelible mark. At the time, women were not allowed to be members, but that didn’t stop her from embracing the organization’s spirit of service. Years later, as a retired Kennesaw State University (KSU) professor and the North Cobb Rotary’s youth chair, she continues to lead with passion and purpose.

“What creates the Magic of Rotary is the relationships,” Nancy said. “These folks genuinely care about one another. We live and work together. We’re raising our families together. Our businesses are here, so this community is important to us.”

For 37 years, the North Cobb Rotary has been an integral part of the Kennesaw, Acworth, Marietta and Powder Springs communities, rallying behind causes that matter most. With 119 members and more than 100 service events annually, the club lives by its motto, “Service Above Self.” From tackling food insecurity at KSU and supporting foster children to assisting seniors and aiding in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, the North Cobb Rotary isn’t just an organization - it’s a force for good.

Their partnership with KSU and the Midland Food Bank has made a significant impact, ensuring students don’t have to choose between education and basic needs. They also organize senior luncheons and bingo tournaments to keep older residents engaged, all while fundraising and volunteering to make a difference.

That deep connection to the community is evident in every project the club undertakes. Whether it’s improving parks, enhancing signage in the area or simply lending a hand where it’s needed, their impact is unmistakable. And while the service work is fulfilling, there’s also plenty of fun. One of their biggest fundraisers, the annual “Smoke on the Lake” barbecue competition, is set for Mother’s Day weekend May 9-10. Featuring live music, public taste tests and a friendly competition among grill masters, the event is a can’t-miss for food lovers. Most importantly, the proceeds go back into the community. Mark your calendars for May 9th and 10th at Logan Farm Park in downtown Acworth

The North Cobb Rotary’s commitment to service has not gone unnoticed. The club has been awarded Club of the Year three of the last five years beginning in 2019 to 2023 and is now competing with larger clubs in the district for similar honors. Their partnership with the Town Center CID and Alliance has further strengthened their impact, ensuring that Kennesaw remains a thriving, welcoming place for all.

For those looking to get involved, the Rotary welcomes new members who share their passion for service. They meet every Thursday morning from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Copeland’s in Kennesaw, where they discuss upcoming projects, enjoy a great breakfast, build friendships and plan new ways to give back.
