Project Description

Project Information

The goal of this multi-phase project is to provide an alternate route around one of the busiest roads in the Town Center area, Barrett Parkway. When complete, the Reliever will connect from Barrett Lakes Blvd to Chastain Meadows Pkwy, bypassing Barrett Parkway and both major interstate interchanges.

Phase one included the realignment of Greers Chapel Road at its intersection with Barrett Lakes Boulevard and the widening of the roadway to four lanes, including a 20-foot raised median, from Cobb Parkway to Barrett Parkway. This phase of the project was completed and open to the public in 2010.

The second phase of the South Barrett Reliever project, completed in 2018, provides critical safety improvements with the realignment of Barrett Lakes Boulevard at Shiloh Valley Drive, including a two-lane roundabout at the intersection. To make pedestrian travel easier, crosswalks and a 5’ sidewalk were built around the roundabout, further enhanced with lighting and area landscaping. These improvements will increase public interest in walking in the area, previously considered too congested to be enjoyable for those on foot. In addition, a new pocket park, being designed by Kimley-Horn and Associates, will be installed to further enhance the walkability and pedestrian safety of the area. The pocket park will include shaded seating and landscaping located on the southwest side of Barrett Lakes Boulevard and the new roundabout.

Current Status

The phase two roundabout and road realignment is complete and landscaping, lighting, and the addition of the pocket park is in progress. Phase three of the project extends the Reliever over I-75 and improves Roberts Court between the Reliever and Barrett Parkway to the east. This phase received a $1.5M grant from GTIB/SRTA in 2017 and ARC committed an additional $10.4M in 2018. The Preliminary Engineering is complete and Right of Way Acquisition is currently in progress.

The South Barett Reliever will cost $43,502,968 across four phases, which will be paid for in a joint effort between the Town Center CID, SRTA & GTIB, Georgia DOT and Cobb County DOT.
